News to Me: Domestic Spying And Social Media: Google, Facebook “Back Doors” For Government Wiretaps

The Obama administration is close to announcing its support for a law that would force Google, Facebook and other Internet communications companies to build back doors for government wiretaps, according to an article in the New York Times Wednesday.

Such a measure would allow intelligence agencies, particularly the FBI, to monitor a vast array of communications, including Facebook messages, chats, and email using services such as Gmail.

The move comes as the National Security Agency’s sprawling new data center in Utah prepares to come online in September of this year. The facility is rumored to store data on the scale of trillions of terabytes, meaning that it can easily house the contents of every personal computer in the world.

Under the terms of the 1994 Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act, known as CALEA, hardware used to facilitate Internet and voice communications—the networks through which data is transmitted—must have the technical means to allow the government to conduct wiretaps.

The spying capabilities created in the context of this earlier law made possible the massive illegal domestic spying programs conducted under the Bush administration, and tens of thousands of ongoing secret court-approved wiretaps conducted under Obama. Under Bush, reports emerged that the government was essentially given full access to transmission systems by many Internet Service Providers (ISPs), such as AT&T.

US intelligence agencies were satisfied with these capabilities up until around 2010, when, in response to a series of security breaches, services such as Gmail and Facebook enabled encryption by default.

As a result of this move, communications using these services became inaccessible to conventional wiretapping, which relied on intercepting the (now encrypted) data traveling between users and routed by ISPs.

To offset the effects of encryption, the FBI has sought to force companies to create back doors for surveillance, with varying degrees of success. Following its purchase by Microsoft, Skype, the online chat and voice service, last year voluntarily reengineered its architecture to allow the US and other governments to monitor chat communications.

The FBI claims that, under current laws, Internet communications companies can effectively refuse to comply with a court-ordered wiretap by claiming that there is no practical way for them to allow the government to spy on their users’ communications.

The proposed law would force social networks and other communications companies to provide government access or face fines that, according to the Washington Post, would multiply exponentially and threaten companies with bankruptcy.

While keeping silent on the unconstitutional nature of the US government’s vast domestic spying apparatus, groups representing major Silicon Valley corporations have raised concerns about the difficulty of implementing the proposed government wiretapping capabilities, particularly for start-ups and small companies, which behemoths like Facebook and Apple rely on for developing new technologies.

According to the Times, officials are working to reformulate the law to satisfy these concerns while forcing the most widely used services to allow wiretapping.

“While the F.B.I.’s original proposal would have required Internet communications services to each build in a wiretapping capacity, the revised one, which must now be reviewed by the White House, focuses on fining companies that do not comply with wiretap orders,” the Times reported. “The difference, officials say, means that start-ups with a small number of users would have fewer worries about wiretapping issues unless the companies became popular enough to come to the Justice Department’s attention.”

In addition to forcing Internet communications companies to allow wiretapping, the law would also put even more pressure on ISPs to ensure that they do not break the government’s existing wiretapping capabilities by upgrading their systems.

The Obama administration’s drive to expand the government’s wiretapping comes in the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombings, which have been used as the pretext for the implementation of a range of police state measures, including most notably the lockdown of Boston following the blasts.

The Obama administration has claimed that its wiretapping activities are conducted under warrants issued by a FISA court, which essentially rubber-stamp government spying applications. In 2012, the FISA court did not deny a single application for spying.

However, the full extent of the government’s wiretapping programs is kept totally secret, and its real scope is far more sweeping than what has already been admitted.

A hint of the potentially vast extent of domestic spying was indicated by Tim Clemente, a former FBI counterterrorism agent, last week, in an interview with CNN’s Erin Burnett. Burnett asked Clemente if there was any way that the government would be able to implicate the widow of Boston Marathon bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev in playing a role in the bombing.

Clemente responded by saying, “We certainly have ways in national security investigations to find out exactly what was said in that [phone] conversation. It’s not necessarily something that the FBI is going to want to present in court, but it may help lead the investigation and/or lead to questioning of her.”

By stating that the evidence would not be admissible in court, Clemente was implying that the evidence was gathered illegally. Faced with skepticism from Burnett about the government’s ability to access such data, Clemente added, “Welcome to America. All of that stuff is being captured as we speak whether we know it or like it or not.”

Infowars: Facebook Blocks Infowars Post on Suspicious Men Wearing Backpacks

infowarsdotcom:

Infowars.com
April 19, 2013

UPDATE (1:30PM): We’ve tried posting the article again since this post went up and have had success.

For some reason, the folks at Facebook are blocking an Infowars post pointing out several suspicious people wearing large black backpacks, that some have identified as members of the group Craft International, hovering within feet of the Boston Marathon bombing.

The following article is being blocked by Facebook:
http://www.infowars.com/navy-seals-spotted-at-boston-marathon-wearing-suspicious-backpacks/

When you try to post the article, here’s what you get:

We discovered this moments ago when users began emailing us screenshots of failed posting attempts:

Despite the fact that news organizations like the Washington Times have also reported on the mysterious men spotted wearing large black backpacks at the scene, the Infowars post seems to be the only one being blocked.

Has Facebook been asked by the FBI to censor Infowars content because of the damning photos proving private contractors were actually casing the Boston Marathon PRIOR to the explosions happening?

This appears to indicate classic government censorship like that displayed by the Soviet Union who only allows printed matter, literature, and photographs that are in accordance with the official ideology and politics of the Communist Party.

Here are some of the photos the FBI has ordered people not to look at:

Infowars: Is Facebook’s Smartphone Just a New Way to Collect Data About You?

infowarsdotcom:

Mark Guarino
Christian Science Monitor
April 5, 2013

Using Facebook on your phone? Soon, the company will make it much easier, but, some say, at a steep cost to your privacy.

That’s the tradeoff as the social media giant announces on Thursday that it is launching a branded smartphone that will reportedly operate on software called Facebook Home. Unlike the current Facebook app that allows users to access the site, the new Facebook phone will further integrate the software into features such as text messaging, photo uploading, and more.

As more consumers transition their online habits from desktop computers to smartphones and tablets, advertisers are following. The phone allows Facebook to tap into the lucrative US mobile advertising market that is expected to be worth $7.29 billion by the end of 2013, according to eMarketer.

NYPD Using Facial Recognition Software on Facebook and Instagram Photos

sinidentidades:

DNAinfo.com reports that the New York Police Department is using facial recognition technology to match photos of suspects with images in online databases like Facebook and Instagram.

DNAinfo has the details:

The new technology is the latest weapon in the NYPD’s crime-solving arsenal that already includes DNA databases, radiological detectors and sophisticated license plate readers. The new investigative entity was formally launched late last year, with eight cops working in teams of four manning the operations.

Facial recognition — which zeroes in on features and extracts size and shape of eyes, noses, cheekbones and jaws to find a match — is now revolutionizing investigations in ways not seen since fingerprint analysis was implemented generations ago.

Analysts who follow the NYPD closely fear the new investigation tactics could lead to racial profiling.

“The ways that law enforcement is using technology is increasingly becoming a concern for communities of color. There’s a long, ugly history of surveillance in these communities, dating back to COINTELPRO and leading up to the NYPD’s recent and unwarranted surveillance of Muslim communities,” said Colorlines.com’s news editor Jamilah King. “These new tactics are frightening precisely because racial profiling is so rampant.”

Reason.com | Police Union Director Jokes on Facebook About Two Women Being Sexually Assaulted by a Police Officer

beatyourselfup:

A Texas state trooper charged with sexually assaulting two women during a traffic stop was providing them with “customer service,” says Dale Roberts, the executive director of the Columbia Police Officers Association (CPOA) and a professor at the University of Missouri. (The CPOA is a part of the Fraternal Order of Police, one of the country’s largest police unions.)

“It’s called Customer Service!” Roberts wrote in a March 27 Facebook post about the indictment of Texas State Trooper Kelly Helleson, who was charged with two counts of sexual assault after conducting an illegal roadside strip search of two women. “We just did it so they wouldn’t have to make the trip all the way down to the station,” he added. A screenshot of Roberts’ post was taken by Keep Columbia Free, a civil liberties blog run by Mark Flakne.

…

In addition to cracking jokes about the Dobbs’ assault (including, in the comment section of his own Facebook post, “Evidently, the [sic] searched them downtown without going downtown”), Roberts recently came under fire for a racist joke he posted last month on CPOA’s Facebook page.

“If CPD rolled up in the new Mercedes 6x16, you KNOW all the boys in the hood would come running out the house,” Roberts wrote on the CPOA Facebook page. The post was in regards to the Columbia Police Department’s campaign to get the city to buy it a Mercedes 6x16, which is an armored personnel carrier used by the military. After Columbia’s mayor called the Facebook post racist, Roberts apologized, saying it was “intended to be satirical in nature.”

While Dale Roberts is not a police officer, he is the head of the Columbia chapter of the Fraternal Order of Police, a professor of constitutional law at the University of Missouri, and an instructor at the University of Missouri’s Law Enforcement Training Institute. You’d think he’d have better judgement.

Magpul May Flood Colorado Market Before Leaving
Adan SalazarInfowars.comFebruary 28, 2013
A few weeks ago, the Magpul Industries Corporation, based out of Erie, Colorado, announced it was ready to make a huge gesture in favor of the Second Amendment by relocating their company headquarters if the state goes ahead with proposed gun control legislation.
Now the company is going one step further by offering Colorado residents the opportunity to purchase “up to ten (10) standard capacity AR/M4 magazines directly from Magpul” before a ban goes into effect. The orders will be shipped at a flat-rate fee of $5.
The following appeared on the company’s Facebook page Tuesday:

We are proud to announce that within a matter of days we will be going live with a new program. Due to a bill currently moving through the Colorado legislature, there is the possibility that Colorado residents’ ability to purchase standard capacity magazines will soon be infringed. Before that happens, and Magpul is forced to leave the state in order to keep to our principles, we will be doing our best to get standard capacity PMAGs into the hands of any Colorado resident that wants them.
Verified Colorado residents will be able to purchase up to ten (10) standard capacity AR/M4 magazines directly from Magpul, and will be given immediate flat-rate $5 shipping, bypassing our current order queue.
Our customers outside of Colorado, please know that our PMAG production will continue at an ever-increasing rate until we do relocate, shipments to our distributors in other states will continue, and that we do not expect relocation to significantly impact PMAG production. We are also aware that Colorado is not the only state with existing or pending magazine capacity restrictions; we are working on programs for other affected states as well.
Full details and instructions will be announced when we are able to go live; please watch here for the coming announcement.

The Casper, Wyoming Star Tribune reports that Magpul is making good on its threat and has been conducting talks with Wyoming lawmakers to move to the Cowboy State if magazine legislation is passed.
Magpul’s departure would have a somewhat devastating effect on jobs and state revenue as it employs more than 600 employees and subcontractors and says it planned to spend more than $85 million in the state over the next year.
Another Colorado manufacturer, Alfred Manufacturing Co. based in North Denver, has mirrored Magpul’s threat to leave Colorado should the laws pass, saying the manufacturing companies are “in this together.”
“If House Bill 1224 passes, we will relocate part or all of our operations out of state,” Alfred Manufacturing chief executive Greg Alfred told the Governor and members of the state legislature.
The Colorado House has passed four gun control bills now slated for a Senate vote. The bills would:

• Limit gun magazines to 15 rounds.
• Require background checks for all gun transactions.
• Ban concealed weapons on college campuses.
• Impose a fee for gun buyers to cover the cost of their background checks.

One of the bills, House Bill 1224, has been amended in an attempt to convince manufacturers to stay put by letting them still make high-capacity magazines for out-of-state buyers, however both companies seem little swayed by this.
“If we’re able to stay in Colorado and manufacture a product, but law-abiding citizens of the state were unable to purchase the product, customers around the state and the nation would boycott us for remaining here,” Doug Smith, Magpul’s chief operating officer told the Denver Post. “Staying here would hurt our business.”
It’s also encouraging to see that several other companies throughout the country have come out in defense of the Second Amendment.
Firearm manufacturer Beretta USA recently announced its intent to leave Maryland if the state enacts a gun control measure known as the Firearm Safety Act. “Enact such measures at your own risk,” the company told lawmakers, according to Bizpac Review.
“In a letter to lawmakers, Beretta’s Jeff Reh said legislation proposed by Gov. Martin O’Malley will ‘treat as dangerous millions of people who lawfully and safely own semi-automatic rifles and the tens of millions of people who lawfully and safely own magazines that hold more than 10 rounds. It tells those people that you can protect your life, your family or your business, even against multiple assailants, as long as you can get do so in 10 rounds or less. It tells all of these people that in Maryland there is a limit on the extent to which you can exercise your 2nd Amendment rights, a limit that does not apply, by the way, to police officers who buy these products for the same protective reasons that are desired by the general public,’” Kurt Nimmo wrote earlier in the week.
Last week, we also wrote about a Virginia Pizza shop that is offering a 15% discount for customers who carry openly or present their concealed weapons permit. Pizza shop owner Jay Laze, speaking of the success of his deal, told The Virginian-Pilot that about 80 percent of his clientele had been taking advantage of the deal and that “it’s been awesome.”

The Red (computer) Scare: Is the Chinese military behind hundreds of hacking instances since 2006? One U.S. computer security firm believes so, fanning concerns that U.S. digital infrastructure, both private and governmental, isn’t up to snuff. From reporter Michael Muskall’s look at Mandiant’s findings:

The hacking activity was likely part of the mandate of the Unit 61398 of China’s People’s Liberation Army, identified in the report as “one of the most persistent of China’s cyber threat actors.” The unit is based in the Pudong New Area, outside of Shanghai from where the computer attacks originate.

Read the report for yourself here, and see if you agree that the recent hacking spree, which has targeted companies from Facebook and Apple to the New York Times and Wall Street Journal, is being dictated by the Chinese government.

Alex's Blog: Cops Raid House After Man Posts Image of Toy Mortar on Facebook

thealexjonesblog:

James Rush
dailymail.co.uk
February 13, 2013

Armed police who stormed to a house after reports of a mortar gun discovered it was an Action Man toy.

Police wielding submachine guns raced to the home of Ian Driscoll, 43, after he posted a new profile picture on Facebook.

Mr Driscoll’s picture showed an Action Man plastic figure and in the background was a toy mortar gun, around six inches tall.

The mortar gun was next to a TV remote control clearly showing its small size but someone who saw it contacted police.
