U.N. Disarmament Conference Chaired by Iran

freeplanetickettonorthkorea:

According to U.N. Watch, the U.N. Disarmament Conference which began on May 13 is being chaired by Iran. U.N. Watch executive director Hillel Neuer declared, “This is like putting Jack the Ripper in charge of a women’s shelter.”

Are you kidding me? The U.N. Needs to be shut down and removed from New York, because they are a joke. We have countries who are human rights violators on Human Rights councils and now this is being chaired by Iran…

UN approves peacekeeping force for Mali

priceofliberty:

About 11,000 troops, including 6,000 African soldiers already in Mali, to begin mission in July if situation secure.

The UN Security Council has unanimously voted to authorise about 12,600 international troops and police to undertake a peacekeeping mission in Mali.

The UN’s Multi-dimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in Mali, to be known by its French acronym MINUSMA, would have a maximum of 11,200 soldiers and 1,440 police.

The core of the force will come from approximately 6,300 troops from 10 African nations already in Mali.

The UN is aiming for a July start by the new force, but the 15-nation council will decide later whether the conflict has eased enough for the handover.

France will begin a phased withdrawal of its 4,500-strong contingency which will see 1,000 troops left in the country by the end of the year.

The remaining French troops will maintain responsibility for military strikes against those groups who are now waging an armed campaign.

I have a new article up on The Fix, check it out y’all:
Afghan Opium Production Up for Third Year Running | The Fix

Opium cultivation in Afghanistan is up for the third year in a row and heading towards a record high, according to a new UN report. The Afghanistan Opium Risk Assessment 2013, issued by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, attributes the increase to opium’s rising price, making it an even more attractive crop for farmers. The figure for 2013 is expected to surpass the 154,000 hectares planted in 2012, according to the report. Afghanistan is the world’s largest producer of opium, accounting for about 75% of the global supply last year. “The assumption is it will reach again to 90% this year,” says Jean-Luc Lemahieu, head of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime in Afghanistan. “We are looking at a record high cultivation.”
Lemahieu was recently interviewed for The Fix’s exclusive report on the heroin addiction crisis within Afghanistan, which has an estimated 1 million addicts. Earlier this month, the UN also estimated that 1 million deaths worldwide have been caused by Afghan heroin since the US-led “War on Terror” began in 2001, while opium production has increased 40 times. Over 70% of Afthan opium is produced by just three provinces. US troops have attempted to subdue the Taliban influence and find alternative crops for these regions’ farmers. But after the end of the three-year “surge” in 2012, poppy cultivation has soared. It may be that people are turning to illicit markets in greater numbers in anticipation of the predicted withdrawal of foreign forces—and cash—in 2014. “This country is on its way to becoming the world’s first true narco-state,” says an anonymous international law enforcement official. “The opium trade is a much bigger part of the economy already than narcotics ever were in Bolivia or Colombia.”

News to Me: UN Gun Treaty A Threat

n-morgan:

April 11, 2013   AFP

• Worldwide control of all guns is ultimate objective of UN weapons summit

By Jeffrey Smith

NEW YORK, N.Y.—The United Nations Conference on the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT 2013) concluded in early April with a framework for worldwide control of guns, including provisions some critics contend could place Americans’ privately-held firearms under the international agreement and include even universal gun registration.

The conference proceeded through days of negotiations on smaller points of the treaty, which were presented to delegates to vote on. Raising the most controversy outside the hall with many Second Amendment and patriot groups were the 11th and 15th articles in the treaty. Some contend these could be interpreted to allow an international organization to overrule the Constitution and force gun registration on American citizens—what the UN treaty document refers to as “non-state actors.”

What many observers found most striking was the lack of involvement of many well-known Second Amendment gun owner associations. There were no news conferences. Only a few position papers were distributed to media explaining gun owners’ views. There were no mass distributions of notifications and protest literature to Second Amendment supporters in the area—and most of all, those close to the situation say, there was no effort to mount any kind of demonstration or public gathering anywhere near the UN buildings.

In the days since the conclusion of the UN conference, gun owners have been increasingly thrust into very serious legal danger with what appears to be a third wave of attempts to impose heavy restrictions on firearms ownership. This includes proposed legislation on federal and state levels.

Why Aren’t Pro-Gun Groups Up in Arms Over UN Treaty?

By Jeffrey Smith

In the wake of the school tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut, a wave of moves to greatly restrict Americans’ Second Amendment rights has swept the nation. As if that’s not bad enough, a larger, far darker picture has emerged, leaving many longtime firearms-rights activists and knowledgeable gun owners  unsettled.

Many seasoned observers in firearms-rights circles are alarmed about what just occurred at the United Nations, where the Arms Trade Treaty, after a 10-day conference March 18-28, was approved by the UN General Assembly April 2. The grave concern is that this treaty, by placing worldwide rules and restrictions on the “international” sale and trade of firearms, will adversely affect civilian ownership of firearms in member nations.

The key legal matter here is that the UN and its backers believe treaty law supersedes anything that the United States Congress or state legislatures may decide. Powerful policy-setting non-governmental organizations, mostly in based in Manhattan, are a central force in elevating treaty law from behind the scenes.

Many firearms-rights advocates have been questioning why key gun organizations are quieting their memberships’ well-justified fears, by claiming that what has been unfolding at the UN has little actual importance, and that strong intervention is not necessary.

Over the years, patriots have warned that should the UN pass some kind of mandatory full registration requirement or total gun-ownership ban, or any measure clearly beyond Constitutional limits, such a requirement could—in the present legal atmosphere under treaty law—be used to bypass all domestic Constitutional safeguards. And it would be impossible to reverse the action.

But as was the case with the last UN arms conference in July 2012, major gun-rights organizations did not seriously attempt to interfere with what occurred at the UN in March. Some lesser-known pro-gun groups issued statements and had representatives at this latest conference, but there were no demonstrations outside the UN, nor was a serious effort made to enact high-profile dissent against the UN’s Arms Trade Treaty. Yet, many of the older, long-established gun-rights organizations have absorbed millions of dollars of gun owners’ donations, even while downplaying the importance of UN gatherings on firearms regulations.

And evidently there were no mass mailings to alert gun owners in the Tri-state area close to the UN about the latest conference.

And the lack of major gun organizations’ involvement with this latest, pivotal UN conference was so striking that it was noticed by the liberal press. The British Guardian newspaper recently ran a front-page article noting that the National Rifle Association appeared to be silent on the UN conference that had just concluded.

But consider a rarely discussed organization, which is emerging as a highly important component in the large number of non-governmental organizations and academic outfits that have been supporting the latest UN arms conference and the international movement for gun confiscation. This organization, based in London, is the International Action Network on Small Arms, or IANSA.

IANSA conducts constant activities aimed at arms control, including stringent restriction, under treaty law, of civilian access to firearms of any kind, and, failing that, an international registry.

IANSA also seeks the establishment of gun control organizations in UN member states and the stimulation of existing groups to higher levels of activism. IANSA is so central and critical to international gun control that most seasoned observers rank it, by far, the most powerful influence in the anti-firearms movement. Yet, well-established, better-financed Second Amendment groups have been mum when it comes to the powerful IANSA.

And the continuing gun-control debate has had the effect of, for the first time in memory, splitting the pro-gun community to a hazardous degree.

News to Me: UN Demands Prosecution Of Bush-Era CIA Crimes

n-morgan:

March 05, 2013

RT

bushcriminal

A United Nations investigator has demanded that the US publish classified documents regarding the CIA’s human rights violations under former President George W. Bush, with hopes that the documents will lead to the prosecution of public officials.

Documents about the CIA’s program of rendition and secret detention of suspected terrorists have remained classified, even though President Obama’s administration has publicly condemned the use of these “enhanced interrogation techniques”. The US has not prosecuted any of its agents for human rights violations.

UN investigator Ben Emmerson, the UN special rapporteur on the promotion and protection of human rights while countering terrorism, said that the classified documents protect the names of individuals who are responsible for serious human rights violations.

“Despite this clear repudiation of the unlawful actions carried out by the Bush-era CIA, many of the facts remain classified, and no public official has so far been brought to justice in the United States,” Emmerson said in a report to the UN Human Rights Council, according to Reuters.

Kept in secret prisons around the world, the CIA’s detainees were subjected to torture including waterboarding, sleep deprivation and various other interrogation techniques that violate human rights. The detainees were often subjected to clandestine transfers to secret prisons known as CIA ‘black sites’.

“There is now credible evidence to show that CIA ‘black sites’ were located on the territory of Lithuania, Morocco, Poland, Romania and Thailand, and that the officials of at least 49 other states allowed their airspace or airports to be used for rendition flights,” Emmerson said, describing how suspected terrorists were often detained without being charged for any crimes, receiving extradition procedures or having access to lawyers.

Emmerson has urged the US to prosecute any public official who was involved in setting up the CIA “black sites” at which human rights or legal violations occurred. Even though the Obama administration has condemned those who promoted the use of such facilities for inhumane procedures, the administration has taken no steps to punish any of its public officials. Attorney General Eric Holder has said that the Justice Department would not take legal actions against those who “acted in good faith” and followed the guidelines provided by the Office of Legal Counsel during the Bush era.

But without names and details about the involvement of US officials at CIA black sites, the government is maintaining a level of secrecy and “perpetuating impunity for the public officials implicated in these crimes,” Emmerson said.  A Senate committee led by Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) previously investigated the CIA’s interrogation program and may have had complete access to classified information about it.

Emmerson has called for this information to be published “without delay, and to the fullest extent possible.”

While the UN special rapporteur lacks the power to force the Obama administration to release this information, his report puts further pressure on the US government to expose a practice it publicly condemns, but continues to keep secret.

U.N. investigator urges U.S. to pursue Bush-era abuses

sinidentidades:

A United Nations investigator called on the United States on Monday to publish its findings on the CIA’s Bush-era program of rendition and secret detention of terrorism suspects.

Ben Emmerson, U.N. special rapporteur on the promotion and protection of human rights while countering terrorism, voiced concern that while President Barack Obama’s administration has rejected Central Intelligence Agency practices conducted under his predecessor George W. Bush, there have been no prosecutions.

“Despite this clear repudiation of the unlawful actions carried out by the Bush-era CIA, many of the facts remain classified, and no public official has so far been brought to justice in the United States,” Emmerson said in a report to the U.N. Human Rights Council, which he will address on Tuesday.

Emmerson, an international lawyer from Britain, has served since August 2011 in the independent post set up by the U.N. Human Rights Council in 2005 to probe human rights violations committed during counter-terrorism operations worldwide.

The “war on terror” waged by Bush after al Qaeda attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001 led to “gross or systematic” violations involving secret prisons for Islamic militant suspects, clandestine transfers and torture, Emmerson said.

Under Obama, Attorney General Eric Holder said that the Department of Justice would not prosecute any official who acted in good faith and within the scope of legal guidance given by its Office of Legal Counsel in the Bush era on interrogation.

But Emmerson said that using a “superior orders defense” and invoking secrecy on national security grounds was “perpetuating impunity for the public officials implicated in these crimes”.

A Senate select committee on intelligence, chaired by Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein of California, investigated the CIA secret detention and interrogation program, including use of “waterboarding”, which simulates drowning.

Bush, who authorized the CIA’s secret prisons overseas, said in his memoirs he had ordered the use of “waterboarding”, which rights experts consider a form of torture banned by international law.

Emmerson said that the Senate panel was believed to have had unrestricted access to classified information for its comprehensive review, completed in December 2011.

He urged the U.S. government “to publish without delay, and to the fullest extent possible” the Senate report, except for any information strictly necessary to protect legitimate national security interests or the safety of people identified in it.

Infowars: How the U.N. Caused Haiti’s Cholera Crisis — and Won’t Be Held Responsible

infowarsdotcom:

Armin Rose
The Atlantic
March 2, 2013

If a multinational corporation behaved the way the U.N. did in Haiti, it would be sued for stratospheric amounts of money. And that’s just for starters: Were Unilever or Coca-Cola responsible for a cholera outbreak that killed 8,000 people and infected 640,000 more, and for subsequently covering up its employees’ failure to adhere to basic sanitation standards, it is likely their executives would have difficulty visiting countries claiming universal legal jurisdiction. They would have to contend with Interpol red notices, along with the occasional cream pie attack. And the companies themselves would go into damage control mode, akin to BP’s post-oil-spill public relations blitz, or Wal-Mart’s pivot toward promoting American-made products. They’d acknowledge the need to convince skeptical consumers that their corporate behavior had changed.

The U.N. and its leadership won’t have to worry about any of this. But maybe it should.

As award-winning journalist Jonathan Katz established in a bombshell chapter of his recent book, The Big Truck That Went By, a base for Nepalese U.N. peacekeepers next to the Artibonite River was the origin of the cholera epidemic that swept through Haiti in October of 2010. There had been no reported cases of cholera in Haiti for a century; now, the disease is endemic, and it is projected to kill as many as 1,000 people a year until it is eradicated, according to Brian Concannon, director of the Institute for Justice and Democracy in Haiti and a lawyer representing Haitian claimants against the U.N. Former president Bill Clinton, the U.N.’s special envoy for Haiti, has admitted that U.N. peacekeepers were responsible for the outbreak. But Katz, the AP’s Haiti correspondent in the years after the country’s devastating 2010 earthquake, was at the receiving end of a bungled U.N. cover-up of the epidemic’s cause. The World Body actively discouraged and even impeded journalists and public health investigators attempting to trace the causes of the pestilence. The U.N. never admitted responsibility, even as a U.N. commissioned-report left little room for doubt (the entire saga is recounted in Katz’s chapter, which should be read in full).

Infowars: Iran Nuke Fantasy Gets Boost From Gallup Poll

infowarsdotcom:

Kurt Nimmo
Infowars.com
January 21, 2013

Mural at former US Embassy, Tehran. Photo by David Holt.

It looks like years of non-stop propaganda may soon bear fruit. According to a recent Gallup poll, a staggering 99 percent of Americans believe Iran’s nuclear program is a threat to the United States.

99 percent believe Iran’s nuclear program poses a threat “to the vital interests of the United States in the next 10 years,” the poll states. 83% said it was a “critical threat” and another 16% said it was an “important, [but] not critical” threat. Just 1% didn’t consider Iran a threat.

The poll results reveal how effective years of non-stop propaganda against Iran has been. The new poll will embolden the neocons in the United States and the Likudniks in Israel and encourage new calls for the United States to attack Iran.

Under the terms of the 1968 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, Iran has the right to produce nuclear power for peaceful purposes. The United Nations International Atomic Energy Agency has found no evidence Iran is developing a nuclear weapons program and Defense Secretary Leon Panetta told Face the Nation in January that Iran is not currently building a nuclear weapon.

The intelligence community released a National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) in 2007 indicating Iran does not have a nuclear weapons program. “We judge with high confidence that in fall 2003, Tehran halted its nuclear weapons program,” the NIE stated. “We assess with moderate confidence Tehran had not restarted its nuclear weapons program as of mid-2007.”

“Although Iran continues to enrich uranium at low levels, U.S. officials say they have not seen evidence that has caused them to significantly revise” the conclusions reached in the NIE, the Los Angeles Times reported on February 23.

In November of 2011 an IAEA report failed to indicate Iran has a nuclear weapons program.

“In its February 2012 report, the IAEA confirmed for the umpteenth time that there was no diversion of nuclear material from” its 15 nuclear facilities, including its uranium enrichment plants at Natanz and Fordow, writes David Morrison.

In 2011 it was reported by the United States Institute of Peace and others that Iran was having problems with its nuclear program. In addition to fending off U.S. and Israeli cyber attacks, persistent sabotage of its nuclear facilities and the assassination of its scientists, Iran is finding it difficult to obtain essential parts on the international market and until recently had issues with its centrifuges.

In January, the International Atomic Energy Agency officially confirmed that Iran had started enriching uranium to the 20-percent level. “The IAEA can confirm that Iran has started the production of uranium enriched up to 20 percent using IR-1 centrifuges in the Fordo Fuel Enrichment Plant,” the agency said in a statement,” RIA Novosti reported.

20 percent uranium enrichment is a long way off from more than 90 percent, the amount required to make an atomic weapon.

“Despite mixed signals from Iran and intelligence claims that it is not seeking a bomb, the real reason the neocon faction of the global cabal continue to harp their bomb Iran mantra has nothing to do with nukes – it has to do with the perception that Iran is too big for its britches and wields to much influence in the neighborhood, especially over contentious Shiites (in particular Hezbollah in Lebanon),” we wrote in February.

Attacking Iran remains a key objective for the global elite. In January we reported comments made by the globalist kingpin, renowned war criminal and Rockefeller co-conspirator Henry Kissinger at the economic confab held at Davos, Switzerland.

“There has emerged in the region, the current and most urgent issue of nuclear proliferation. For 15 years, the permanent members of the United Nations Security Council have declared that a nuclear Iran is unacceptable, but it has been approaching,” Kissinger said.

He then said governments will “come to a determination of how to react, or the consequences of non-reaction… [in] a few years.”

In November, Kissinger said the U.S. has a “limited time” to negotiate with Iran before military action will be taken against its nuclear program, although he did not address Iran’s inability to produce weapons grade uranium.

The Gallup poll establishes another milestone for the global elite as they work to drum up consensus for an attack on Iran. Gaining public support for unprovoked and illegal attacks on sovereign nations is a relatively easy affair over the long term, as the experience with the invasion of Iraq shows. Iraq never had weapons of mass destruction, as the neocons, the Bush administration, and a malleable establishment media claimed.

Great News! UN set to control the internet

poorrichardsnews:

I’ll never understand why the UN thinks it has any power. It supposedly exists to prevent another world war, but it’s become nothing more a rag tag group of  unelected, multi-ethnic, pseudo-intellectual progressives hell bent on micromanaging the lives of all they claim to represent (I just realized that I could use this same description for Democrats…except for the unelected thing). It literally has no US jurisdiction and does not have the power to legally govern anyone, unless, of course, we give them that power. Well it looks like we are trying to do just that. In addition to regulating firearms, policing our polling stations and instituting the ironically named “Robin-Hood Tax”, they are now seeking to regulate the internet. Elections have consequences.

From the Hill:

U.S. Ambassador Terry Kramer warned on Friday that a proposal to give a United Nations agency more control over the Internet is gaining momentum in other countries.

Proposals to expand the U.N.’s International Telecommunications Union’s (ITU) authority over the Internet could come up at a treaty conference in Dubai in December. European telecommunications companies are pushing a plan that would create new rules that would allow them to charge more to carry international traffic.

The proposal by the European Telecommunications Network Operators’ Association could force websites like Google, Facebook and Netflix to pay fees to network operators around the world.

This is just further evidence of the massive disparity between what is actually happening in this country and what the average voter thinks is happening. I would be willing to bet that less than 15% of the American public actually thinks it’s a good idea to let the UN tax and regulate the internet yet many of the remaining 85% will continue to vote for people that will allow things like to happen. Oh well. I suppose if that weren’t the case, this blog wouldn’t exist.

Indoctrinating Our Youth in Earth Worship (by LibertyInOurTime)

Investigative journalist and senior editor of The New American magazine, William F. Jasper exposes the dangers posed by the “Earth Charter”. Filmed in 2002 and produced by The John Birch Society.
